Nelson Palmer has served the Sedgewickville Fire Protection District for over two decades, joining the department in 2002 after recognizing the community’s need for dedicated responders. His passion for emergency services started at a young age, inspired by his older brother, who brought him along to the firehouse and introduced him to the world of firefighting.

Born in Jefferson City, Nelson spent part of his early life in Sedgewickville, completed the last four years of school in Tennessee, and has called Sedgewickville home for the past 21 years.

Nelson comes from a large family spread across the country. He and his wife of 21 years have built a life together on their small hillside farm and are raising five children—three boys and two girls.

Outside of his work as Fire Chief, Nelson enjoys camping and hiking in Missouri’s state parks, fishing with his children, and working on vehicle projects. Despite a lingering ankle injury from a past break, he remains active and hands-on in both his professional and personal pursuits. He doesn’t smoke or chew and has a particular dislike of cats—a fun fact many find surprising.

When asked what he loves about being a First Responder, Nelson says:

“Being part of a brotherhood and helping people. Oh, and playing with the lights and sirens is fun too.”

Nelson’s long-standing commitment, leadership, and dedication to the Sedgewickville community make him a respected and valued Fire Chief.
